Dies Alter

The second day of academy brought the first day of classes. Students attended Conversational Latin, Roman Art, and Latin Poetry Recitation (the a,b,c classes). There were a few nervous faces entering Conversational Latin, but soon students were chanting the alphabet in the halls and practicing new phrases together. After lunch, both the Latin and the Japanese Academies met with Officer Mo from campus safety. He explained how the alarm systems, emergency phones, and weather alert systems work at RMC. We then split into groups with the first going to play the Game of Famous Romans while others met with Dining Services about the ways RMC is accommodating individual dietary restrictions. After a few rounds of GoFR, Dr. Casey split the students into their families and led them on a petenda or scavenger hunt (all in Latin), looking for clues and hints given during the campus tour. Magistri Carroll and Cavedo closed out the afternoon with an introduction to Roman Comedy in general and Curculio in particular. After their presentation, almost every student signed up from some role or another in the production. Tryouts are tomorrow! After dinner, Dr. Casey delivered the theme lecture and encouraged everyone to reexamine their assumptions about how they construct the self and the other.  Afterwards, Magister Cavedo led the students in Latinae Minutiae, a quiz bowl style game in Latin.  Students ended the day with their first epistulae or mail call.  Finally, take note of the awesome campaign posters in the photo gallery below that students made and posted for the elections to be held on Tuesday.
